Remarkably Bright Creatures is a nice fictional story, though it didn’t deeply touch my feelings. I expected more because of the reviews and its status as an instant New York Times Bestseller. Nevertheless, it tells a heartwarming story of friendship and solidarity. The plot is not exactly unpredictable; while reading, you may encounter some predictable situations.
Despite that, the main characters were my favorites: Marcellus the Octopus and Tova Sullivan. Marcellus is a standout character, offering unique perspectives on humans and feelings despite his captivity in a tank. I think the author should have included more information about Marcellus, as he added significant charm to the story.
The idea of Marcellus was great, and his presence enriched the narrative. However, in my humble opinion, it would have been nice if the book contained more stories told by Marcellus. His insights and observations could have added more depth to the overall story.
Overall, Remarkably Bright Creatures is a pleasant read with memorable characters. The friendship between Tova and Marcellus highlights themes of connection and understanding, making it a touching story worth exploring.
Tova Sullivan an inspiring woman
Tova Sullivan is a 70-year-old woman who works at the aquarium, doing the cleaning on the night shift. She has a strong and kind personality, though she carries the grief of losing her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, 30 years ago.
Tova started working at the aquarium after her husband died a few years ago from cancer. She believes keeping her mind busy helps her cope with the loss of her loved ones.
Dealing with Grief and Unanswered Questions
Even though many years have passed since her son disappeared on a boat, Tova still has doubts and questions about what really happened. Why was the body never found? What truly occurred, since her son never showed any signs of being unwell to the point of wanting to disappear or commit suicide?
Tova is always searching for something or someone to give her an answer. However, so far, only doubts remain. That is why she prefers to stay busy, so she doesn’t think too much and torment herself.
The possibility of interspecies communication?
I enjoy how the book inspires us to consider the possibility of communicating with other species. Marcellus the octopus was an intelligent creature who found ways to communicate with Tova. They could feel each other and understand what the other was trying to express. I like the connection and friendship that is woven between these two characters and how each seeks to help the other overcome their sadness.
Connection and Friendship
It’s amazing how they found a way to communicate, allowing Tova to find relief in the death of her son, thanks to Marcellus. Then, Tova helps Marcellus overcome his captivity in a tank. They show us how true friends support each other in difficult times and find ways to help each other through tough situations.
Life in a Small Town
Sowell Bay is a small, picturesque coastal town in the Pacific Northwest. Its charm lies in its simplicity and the natural beauty that surrounds it. It is a place where time seems to slow down, and the pace of life is more leisurely.
Besides, the Sowell Bay community is close-knit, and everyone knows each other’s stories, tales, and secrets. This type of interaction can be positive, but at times, it can feel very intrusive.
What I like about this community is that people support and look out for each other. They offer help, like bringing food when Tova was incapacitated by her foot injury. They provide emotional and practical support for those in need.
However, the part where everyone is opinionated and aware of each other’s moves seems too much to me. It’s as if they don’t know how to keep a certain distance. Some don’t even know how to measure their comments about other people’s lives. But you can tell they don’t do it with bad intentions; it’s just the way they handle relationships in a small community.
“Tova replies quietly. And this is true. Tova’s bank account would cover her modest needs several times over. She does not need charity: not from Mary Ann, not from anyone else. And further, what a thing to bring up, and all because of a little set of marks on her arm.”
Empathy and Understanding
I like this part because the book shows empathy and understanding about difficult experiences. It highlights the support they give each other as they reach adulthood, which can be more challenging for some than others. However, they always try to support each other.
Marcellus the Octopus
Marcellus, the giant Pacific octopus, is an exceptionally intelligent creature. He has a remarkable ability to solve problems and understand human behavior.
In the story, we see how his intelligence allows him to escape from his tank at night, manipulate objects, and even recognize human beings. I love his sense of humor and the sarcastic way he alludes to certain human behaviors.
“Once I am out of my tank, I must resubmerge within eighteen minutes or I will experience The Consequences. Eighteen minutes, I can survive out of water. This fact is nowhere to be found on the plaque by my tank, of course. I have determined this myself.”
Moreover, Marcellus shows his great capacity as an observer. He understands aspects that humans often miss because of their lack of attention to the present moment. He has an insightful way of grasping human emotions and motivations.
Marcellus acts as a catalyst for Tova’s transformation. He helps her question herself, allowing her to see her life from a new perspective and better understand her son’s disappearance.
Conclusion
Marcellus’ life in captivity is a metaphor for Tova’s emotional confinement. Both characters are trapped by their circumstances but possess inner strength and intelligence that defy their limitations.
If you enjoy fictional stories, you will love this book, Remarkably Bright Creatures.
